Silicon slag is a by-product produced in the process of producing metallic silicon and ferrosilicon, usually composed of 45%~65% silicon and other elements. In the steelmaking process, ferrosilicon and silicon slag are common additives, and their main function is to provide the appropriate silicon content to adjust the chemical composition and properties of steel.

Principle of silicon slag replacing ferrosilicon
Ferrosilicon is an alloy usually composed of iron, silicon and a small amount of other elements, and its main function is to add silicon to molten steel. Ferrosilicon releases soluble silicon when smelted in a furnace, thereby adjusting the chemical composition of steel. Silicon slag is mainly composed of silicon and iron oxide, which usually comes from waste or slag produced during the smelting process. The iron oxide in silicon slag reacts with impurities in steel, causing impurities to precipitate from steel and purify molten steel. The silicon in silicon slag can adjust the chemical composition of steel.

Advantages of silicon slag replacing ferrosilicon
1. Cost-effectiveness: Silicon slag is usually more economical than ferrosilicon because it usually comes from waste or slag materials produced during the smelting process, so it has a lower production cost than ferrosilicon.

2. Furnace lining protection: Adding silicon slag forms a protective layer to reduce direct contact between metal and oxygen, thereby reducing furnace lining wear and maintenance costs.

3. Purification effect: The iron oxide in silicon slag is conducive to forming easily separable oxides with impurities in the metal, effectively purifying molten steel and improving the quality of the final product.

4. Operational flexibility: Silicon slag is usually added in powder or granular form, which has greater flexibility in handling and control compared to ferrosilicon.
